Stop losing orders. Learn how to reduce the cost per part!

In this interview, Danilo Maver speaks with Maurizio Porta, CEO of Porta Solutions S.p.A., retracing the pivotal moments of a bold entrepreneurial decision: moving away from custom-built transfer machines—long a symbol of decades of success—to bet everything on a single revolutionary standard machine, the PORTACENTER.
Maurizio explains how this choice, initially challenged by technical hurdles and market skepticism, paved the way for a new manufacturing paradigm, one that combines productivity with flexibility.
From the breakthrough idea of a machining center with 3 fully independent spindles to the development of the Porta Production Method, the interview reveals how an Italian company turned innovation into a true competitive advantage for its customers.
A direct and insightful exchange that addresses key topics such as reducing fixed costs, optimizing cycle time, and advancing sustainability, offering an authentic perspective on the present and future of manufacturing.
Danilo M. : Maurizio, Porta Solutions has a long and prestigious history. Can you tell us how it all began?
Maurizio P. : The company was founded in 1958 as a builder of custom transfer machines.
For decades, we were recognized internationally for the quality and reliability of that kind of solution.
But in the early 2000s, I realized the market was changing: customers were asking for greater flexibility, smaller batches, and faster changeovers.
Transfer machines, though powerful, were too rigid for that future.
Danilo M. : Was that when you decided to change course?
Maurizio P. : Yes. I decided to abandon the production of special machines and focus on a single standard machine, built in series, but with a revolutionary idea: combining the productivity of a transfer machine with the flexibility of a machining center.
That’s how the PORTACENTER was born—the first machining center with 3 fully independent spindles.
Danilo M. : A bold choice. What was that path like?
Maurizio P. : Not easy. There was a lot of experimentation, some mistakes, prototypes that had to be rebuilt.
At the beginning, the market wasn’t ready, and we had to thoroughly explain the logic behind the new machine.
But every challenge was a step forward.
Every “failure” brought us closer to the version we have today, a mature, reliable machine that is unique in the market.
Danilo M. : What sets the PORTACENTER apart from other machines on the market?
Maurizio P. : It’s designed to turn fixed costs into operating margin.
This means that money saved in fixed costs directly improves the company’s EBITDA.
And in a global market, that is the most important competitive lever.
Danilo M. : The PORTACENTER is also linked to the “Porta Method.” Can you explain it?
Maurizio P. : The Porta Production Method is an approach I developed to avoid replicating outdated production models.
It helps companies rethink their layout, reduce cycle time, increase OEE, and cut costs at the root.
We don’t just sell a machine—we help customers optimize their production department.
Danilo M. : Looking ahead, what do you see for Porta Solutions?
Maurizio P. : I see continuous development.
We are, and will remain, hyper-specialized in 3-independent-spindle machining centers.
We are working on new generations of PORTACENTER, increasingly efficient and sustainable.
Our goal is simple: to ensure every customer can produce better, faster, and with fewer resources.
Danilo M. : A final message for our readers?
Maurizio P. : Change is always a risk. But standing still, today, is a much bigger one.
Porta Solutions’ path shows that true entrepreneurial courage is not about following the beaten path, but about having vision and anticipating the future.
The PORTACENTER and the Porta Production Method are not just technologies: they are concrete tools that help companies produce better, faster, and with fewer resources.
